Extended Family Session at Red Rock Wilderness Overlook
There’s something so special about capturing extended family sessions — the way you get to see how a family has evolved over time, generation by generation. It all begins with two people who love each other, and decades later, that love has grown into children, spouses, and even a grandbaby of their own. Getting to witness — and photograph — that whole beautiful arc in one golden-hour session is such a gift.
The Grandparents
These two were completely smitten with their first and only grandson, and it showed in every single frame. They were silly, playful, and so much fun to watch as they interacted with him — genuinely some of my favorite moments from the whole session. They didn’t even mind that Bluey made a special guest appearance (“Bluey’s part of the family too,” they told me, laughing). And they weren’t afraid to get down in the grass and roll around with the little guy to get him giggling — which, if you ask me, is exactly what these sessions should feel like.
The Parents
And here are the parents of that little guy — the ones who actually booked the session with me! Funny story: Alli and I went to the same high school, all the way down in Chesapeake, VA. Small world that our paths crossed again all the way up here in the NOVA/WV area. It made this session feel even more special, getting to photograph a family with a connection that goes back so much further than the day we met.
The Newly Engaged Couple
Last but certainly not least, I got to capture a newly engaged couple within the family! He’d recently popped the question, and they wanted a few just-the-two-of-them shots to show off that gorgeous ring — and to soak in a little of that just-engaged glow before the whirlwind of wedding planning begins.
Sessions like this one are exactly why I love what I do. One evening, one family, and four generations of love — all in the same golden light. While these sessions take a bit more planning, they’re worth it. Feel free to check out more of my family sessions, and if you’ve got a reunion or a milestone coming up, start a conversation — my inbox is always open!
